Bedroom Furniture – How To Bring Some Color Back Into Your Life

By: Keith Jacobsen Sr.

Making that space your personal sanctuary is critical for your personal well being by giving you; a place to relax and recharge, to start and finish your day and to comfortably spend your sleeping hours. Color is one aspect of putting yourself at ease and offers many options for getting your head together. Combining and finding the right balance of color for you and your spouse is the trick.

Using lighting to advantage

Lighting of the bedroom is an important part of finding the right combination of colors for your bedroom. Color, after all, is merely the reflection of light from a particular medium. A well lit room will give one particular feeling while a darkly lit room will yield an entirely different feeling. The elements of color that you use within the bedroom will be directly affected by the type (natural/artificial) of light in the room, the furnishings, and textures and how the light reflects from.

Finding your style

Choosing the style of the room will directly affect and dictate the colors that are used within the room. A traditional style will likely dictate more earthy browns and or blacks in furniture and color choices. Balancing these darker colors with more neutrals is often required. Perhaps a splash of a more vibrant discrete color can be used in an out-of-the-way spot, but generally a traditional style sort of locks you into a particular color scheme that is relatively ridged but somewhat flexible within the spectrum of traditional style. A more modern style allows a certain amount of color flexibility across the entire spectrum of color. This particular style is generally characterized by straighter lines and certain stiffness. It allows all colors within the space like reds, blues and greens so you can pick your mood. Traditional may reflect a more calming feeling while modern, along its wide interpretation can yield energy, power or a sophisticated coolness depending on the colors you pull together.

The pull and layout color brings

Color is an excellent way to direct you within the space. If you would like to feel relaxed as you move toward the bed orient your color choices toward more calming colors around the headboard area. If you need certain energy to get your days moving use a splash of vibrant color in small ways within the bath areas.

Stick or upholstered furniture

The furniture you use in your bedroom will define the space. If a stick style is used the room will appear lighter and more airy. With this style you can paint to color taste or direct more closely the style taste that you would like in the room. If you go with upholstered furniture, the room will carry a certain weight with it and tend to limit your color choices toward the more traditional. This is not to suggest that a red or green upholstered chair cannot be used but it will tend to be a more defining element within the room and limit the general balanced feel most people strive for.

Think neutrally when considering Carpeting/flooring

There are several ways that a floor can be treated in the bedroom as in the rest of the house. The idea in the bedroom, however, is to be as comfortable on a bare foot as possible rather then a color reflecting emotion or style preference. Although there are many material types that dictate a certain color, going with a neutral color that lets the rest of the space shine is a rule of thumb. If arts and crafts style is a choice, this rule can be bent quite a bit, but in most bedrooms carpet is a more common flooring type.

Function and relaxation in the bathroom

If you are fortunate enough to have a master suite as your personal bedroom space consider form and function in your bathroom color choices. Tiles will give function and form as they are offered in a host of colors and patterns. If you would care for a more relaxed feel over the cleaner look of tile there are many functional wood grain products that will tone down the bathroom while still standing up to water and other products used in a bathroom.

The entire color spectrum

Considering the personal nature of a bedroom the entire spectrum of color awaits you for your selection. If you care for high energy colors think yellows and burnt oranges. A more relaxed feel will tend toward the brown and earthy colors. A relaxing cool will be found with greens and browns while a slight tendency toward the cooler sophisticate can be found in the blue spectrums. The big thing to remember with color, in whatever form you use it, is that it can be changed if you don’t like it. This means go for what you like. It will only cost a bit to change and the annoyance of not having exactly what you want right then and there.
